Solar Hot Water Design and Installation

$2,025

This ten (10) day solar thermal course is designed to provide an overview of the design and installation of the various types of solar thermal systems available. The course is broken into two parts; part one is five (5) days and is a classroom based discussion of theory. The second part is three (3) days and includes the installation of a fully functional 30 tube evacuated thermal system with an 80 gallon holding tank. We will discuss the advantages and disadvantages of flat plate collector systems, tubular collector systems and drain back systems. The students will learn to calculate BTU consumption for a typical home in order to size the thermal solar array. Students will evaluate sites using the solar pathfinder to determine annual/seasonal solar insulation and to establish the amount of shading a site could incur. Students will also be exposed to sweating copper pipe along with basic wiring. At the conclusion of this course, students will have developed skills to complete site evaluations, size a system and will be able to assist with the installation of a solar thermal system.
